Need support attracting top Mammography talent?

What is a Mammographer?

A mammographer is an HCPC-registered radiographer with specialist postgraduate training in breast imaging. Working within the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and symptomatic breast services, mammographers perform, assess and quality-assure mammographic examinations – playing a direct role in the early detection of breast cancer and the improvement of patient outcomes.

Mammography is a highly specialised field requiring both advanced technical skill and a particularly sensitive approach to patient care. Supply of experienced mammographers is tight across the UK, and demand – particularly for Band 6 and Band 7 practitioners with NHSBSP experience – consistently outpaces availability.

Why Services Choose Hunter Gatherer for Mammographer Recruitment:

  • Specialist knowledge of breast imaging We understand the difference between NHSBSP screening roles, symptomatic clinic work and advanced practitioner responsibilities. We match on clinical background and competency – not just HCPC registration.
  • HCPC-verified and fully compliant Every mammographer we place is verified for HCPC registration, DBS, mammography qualification, relevant equipment experience and mandatory training before we put their name forward.
  • Locum and permanent placements Urgent cover or a long-term hire – we support both. Whether you need a Band 6 to cover a gap in your screening rota or a Band 7 to lead a symptomatic service, we’ll find the right match.
  • Nationwide coverage including mobile units We place mammographers across static hospital units, dedicated breast screening centres and mobile screening units throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What Mammographers Do:

Mammographers working in NHS and private breast imaging services are responsible for:

  • Performing mammographic examinations to diagnostic quality, including standard two-view screening mammography
  • Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) examinations where required
  • Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) in advanced settings
  • Supporting symptomatic clinic workflow alongside consultant radiologists and advanced practitioners
  • Assisting with breast interventional procedures – vacuum-assisted biopsy, wire localisation, fine needle aspiration
  • Quality assurance and equipment quality control in line with NHSBSP standards
  • Working across static and mobile screening units
  • Supporting and supervising assistant practitioners and mammography associates
  • Participating in peer review, clinical audit and continuing professional development

Mammography Settings We Recruit For:

Our mammographer network covers placements across all breast imaging environments, including:

  • NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) – static and mobile screening units across all screening regions
  • Symptomatic Breast Clinics – one-stop and triple assessment breast clinics within NHS trusts
  • Breast Diagnostic Centres – dedicated NHS and private breast imaging facilities
  • Private Hospitals and Imaging Centres – Nuffield, Spire, Circle and independent diagnostic providers
  • Mobile Mammography Units – travelling screening services covering rural and community sites
  • Family History Clinics – higher-risk surveillance mammography services

Equipment Experience We Look For:

Breast imaging services use a range of mammography systems, and we ask about equipment familiarity during registration to ensure the right match. Common platforms our candidates work with include:

  • Hologic (Selenia Dimensions, 3Dimensions) – the most widely deployed system in UK screening
  • GE Senographe (Pristina, Essential, DS)
  • Siemens MAMMOMAT (Revelation, Inspiration)
  • Fujifilm AMULET Innovality

If you have experience on specific platforms, let us know – we’ll match you to services using the same or comparable equipment wherever possible.

Qualifications We Look For:

Every mammographer we place holds:

  • HCPC registration (active, no restrictions) as a Diagnostic Radiographer
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Mammography (PgCert) or equivalent qualification acceptable to the NHSBSP
  • Relevant NHSBSP training records (for screening roles)
  • Competency in standard two-view mammography and, where relevant, tomosynthesis or interventional procedures
  • Valid DBS and current mandatory training
  • Up-to-date CPD and participation in peer review

For Band 7 and Band 8a advanced practitioner roles, additional competencies in image reading, abnormality assessment and service leadership will be required.

Lets start the search for your next role in Mammography

Advanced Practice in Mammography:

Experienced mammographers can progress into advanced practice roles that extend beyond image acquisition into clinical decision-making and service leadership. Advanced mammography practitioners at Band 7 and Band 8a typically hold additional competencies in:

  • Symptomatic assessment and abnormality recognition
  • Image reading and reporting (film reading / double reading)
  • Breast ultrasound (where trained)
  • Clinical leadership of screening teams and mobile units
  • Mentoring and training junior mammographers and assistant practitioners

We place advanced practitioners across both NHS and private settings, and these roles command correspondingly higher locum rates and salaries.

Locum Mammographer Opportunities:

Locum mammography work offers genuine flexibility and the chance to work across a variety of breast imaging environments – from busy NHS screening services to private symptomatic clinics. The specialist nature of mammography means locum rates are strong, and demand across the UK is consistent year-round.

We have active mammographer requirements across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh and beyond.

Mammographer Pay Rates (2025/26):

Locum Mammographer Rates (Umbrella)

  • Band 5
    £22-£28 per hour
  • Band 6
    £27-£35 per hour
  • Band 7
    £32-£42 per hour
  • Band 8a (Advanced Practitioner)
    £40-£52 per hour

Rates vary by location, setting, equipment requirements and urgency. London, South East and remote/mobile unit roles typically attract higher rates. Evening, weekend and on-call sessions command a premium above standard rates – typically 1.3–1.5 times the standard rate.

Permanent Mammographer Salaries

Permanent NHS mammographer roles follow Agenda for Change (AfC) pay scales. Band 5 runs from £31,049 to £37,796 (2025/26); Band 6 from £38,682 to £46,580; Band 7 from £47,810 to £54,710. Advanced practitioner Band 8a roles start at £55,690 and rise with seniority.

Our consultants can advise on current going rates for your specific setting and location.

Career Progression in Mammography:

Mammography offers a structured and rewarding specialist career within radiography:

  • Band 5 – newly qualified radiographer undertaking postgraduate mammography training
  • Band 6 – qualified mammographer, competent in screening and symptomatic mammography
  • Band 7 – senior mammographer / team lead, extended scope including image reading, service management
  • Band 8a – advanced practitioner, reporting mammographer, clinical lead of screening programme or symptomatic service
  • Band 8b+ – consultant mammographer / head of breast imaging (less common, highly specialist roles)

Locum work is a popular route for experienced Band 6 and Band 7 mammographers to build breadth of experience across different trusts and service models before stepping into a permanent senior role.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What qualification do mammographers need in the UK? To practise independently as a mammographer within the NHS Breast Screening Programme, radiographers must hold a recognised postgraduate qualification in mammography – typically a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) from an approved HEI – in addition to their base HCPC registration as a diagnostic radiographer.
  • Can you place mammographers on mobile screening units? Yes. We regularly place mammographers on mobile NHSBSP units, which requires practitioners who are comfortable working independently across multiple community sites. We confirm this experience during registration.
  • Do you place advanced practitioners who can read images? Yes. We place Band 7 and Band 8a mammographers with film-reading and abnormality assessment competencies. If your service requires a practitioner with image reading capability, specify this when you contact us and we’ll match accordingly.
  • Can you provide short-notice mammographer cover? Yes. Once a mammographer is registered and compliant with us, we can mobilise quickly. Contact us directly for urgent requirements – we aim to respond same day.
  • What areas do you cover? We place mammographers across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Nottingham and beyond.
