Need support attracting top Biomedical Science talent?

What is a Biomedical Scientist?

Biomedical Scientists are HCPC-registered healthcare professionals who work in clinical laboratories, performing and interpreting diagnostic tests that are critical to patient care. From blood transfusion to histology, BMS professionals sit at the heart of the diagnostic pathway – without their work, clinical decisions simply can’t be made.

In the UK, the demand for experienced BMS professionals continues to outpace supply, making reliable, specialist recruitment support essential for labs that need to maintain service continuity.

Why Labs and Trusts Choose Hunter Gatherer:

  • Specialists in pathology and lab science BMS recruitment isn’t a sideline for us. We work across all major disciplines and understand the difference between a Blood Transfusion-trained Band 6 and a Cellular Pathology specialist – and we’ll never send you a CV that doesn’t fit the role.
  • HCPC-verified and compliance-checked Every BMS we place is verified for HCPC registration, DBS, and relevant experience before their name goes anywhere near a client. No shortcuts.
  • Locum and permanent placements Need cover from next week? Looking to grow your permanent lab team? We support both, with a network of BMS professionals across all bands and disciplines.
  • Fast turnaround Lab gaps don’t wait. We aim to send vetted CVs quickly – tell us the band, discipline, location and urgency, and we’ll take it from there.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do locum BMS roles require HCPC registration? Yes. HCPC registration is a legal requirement for practising as a Biomedical Scientist in the UK. All BMS professionals we place hold current, unrestricted HCPC registration, which we verify before any placement.
  • What disciplines are most in demand? Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry tend to see the highest locum demand, particularly for Band 6 professionals. That said, we see consistent demand across all disciplines – if you’re HCPC-registered and experienced, there’s likely work near you.
  • Can you cover short-notice requirements? Yes. Short-notice and urgent lab cover is something we handle regularly. Once a BMS is registered and compliant with us, we can mobilise them quickly. Contact us directly for urgent requirements.
  • Do you place BMS professionals outside the NHS? Yes. We work with NHS trusts, private hospitals, independent pathology providers and research institutions. If you’re a lab looking for support or a BMS interested in private sector opportunities, get in touch.
