Sonographers

We connect NHS trusts, private hospitals and independent imaging providers with skilled, HCPC-registered sonographers across the UK – placing experienced sonographers in locum and permanent roles across all ultrasound specialisms.

Welcome to Hunter Gatherer AHP – specialist sonography recruitment across the UK.

We place sonographers into NHS ultrasound departments, private imaging centres, independent clinics and mobile ultrasound services on both a locum and permanent basis. Whether you’re a department with an urgent scanning gap or a sonographer looking for your next opportunity, we offer fast, compliant and properly matched recruitment.

What is Sonography?

Sonography is the use of high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of internal body structures for diagnostic and monitoring purposes. Sonographers – also known as ultrasonographers or diagnostic medical sonographers – are HCPC-registered professionals who perform ultrasound examinations, interpret findings and produce clinical reports for referring clinicians.

Ultrasound is one of the most widely used diagnostic modalities in UK healthcare, applied across obstetrics, abdominal imaging, vascular assessment, musculoskeletal diagnostics, cardiac imaging and many other specialisms. Demand for experienced sonographers is consistently high – the NHS faces a significant and ongoing shortfall of qualified practitioners, making locum sonographers an essential part of how imaging services maintain capacity.

Why Departments Choose Hunter Gatherer for Sonography Recruitment:

Specialism-matched, not just available: Obstetrics, vascular, MSK, general, cardiac – we match sonographers on modality competency and experience, not just HCPC registration. You won’t receive an obstetric-only sonographer for a vascular list.

HCPC-verified and fully compliant: Every sonographer we place is verified for HCPC registration, DBS, modality competencies, clinical references and mandatory training before placement.

NHS, private and mobile imaging: We work with NHS acute trusts, private hospitals, independent diagnostic centres and mobile ultrasound providers. Whatever your setting, we can help.

Locum and permanent placements: Urgent cover or a long-term hire – we support both, with the same standards of compliance and candidate quality.

Sonography Specialisms We Cover:

Our sonographer network covers the full range of ultrasound specialisms:

  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OB/Gynae) – antenatal scans, dating, anomaly and growth scans, nuchal translucency, gynaecological assessment; one of the highest-demand specialisms in NHS and private settings
  • General Abdominal – liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, aorta; the core general list in most NHS ultrasound departments
  • Vascular – carotid Doppler, peripheral arterial and venous assessment, DVT diagnosis, aortic aneurysm surveillance, renal vascular
  • Musculoskeletal (MSK) – tendons, ligaments, joints, soft tissue masses; increasingly in demand across NHS outpatient and private MSK clinics
  • Small Parts / Head and Neck – thyroid, parathyroid, lymph nodes, salivary glands, scrotal/testicular, superficial masses
  • Breast Ultrasound – diagnostic breast imaging, triple assessment support, biopsy guidance
  • Paediatric Ultrasound – neonatal head, developmental dysplasia of the hip, paediatric abdominal and renal imaging
  • Renal / Urological – kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, transplant surveillance
  • Cardiac / Echocardiography – transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), specialist cardiac ultrasound
  • Emergency / Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) – focused assessment in emergency and acute settings
  • Interventional Ultrasound – biopsy guidance, drain insertion, aspiration procedures

Routes into Sonography in the UK:

There are two main routes to becoming a qualified sonographer:

Postgraduate route (most common) – healthcare professionals with a relevant degree (typically diagnostic radiography, nursing, midwifery or a healthcare science background) complete a postgraduate qualification in medical ultrasound – usually a PgDip or MSc – at an approved HEI.

Undergraduate route – a small number of universities now offer undergraduate BSc programmes in diagnostic ultrasound or medical imaging, including ultrasound.

All qualified sonographers must hold active HCPC registration as a Diagnostic Radiographer or, in some cases, under another eligible professional category. The Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) and the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) support professional development.

Qualifications We Look For:

Every sonographer we place holds:

  • Active HCPC registration with no restrictions
  • PgDip or MSc in Medical Ultrasound (or undergraduate equivalent) from an accredited programme
  • Competency in the specific modalities required for the role
  • Valid DBS and current mandatory training
  • Relevant post-qualification scanning experience – we confirm the expected case volume and specialism competency for each role
  • For obstetric roles: FMF accreditation (nuchal translucency, anomaly) where required by the department

Locum Sonography Opportunities:

Locum sonography is one of the most financially rewarding areas of locum healthcare work in the UK. High demand, a structural shortage of qualified sonographers, and the specialist nature of the role means locum rates are consistently competitive – and often significantly higher than the equivalent permanent salary.

Whether you want to build experience across different settings as a newly qualified sonographer, cover regular sessions at a specific trust, or take on flexible private clinic work, we’ll match you to opportunities that fit your specialism and availability.

We have active sonographer requirements across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh and beyond.

Lets start the search for your next role in Sonography

Sonographer Pay Rates (2025/26):

  • Locum
Locum sonographer hourly pay rates typically range from £42–£65/hr, with specialist and London roles often at the higher end. Obstetric sonographers with FMF accreditation for anomaly scanning command a premium. Out-of-hours, weekend and mobile ultrasound roles typically attract enhanced rates above these figures.
  • Permanent
Most NHS sonographer roles sit at Band 7 (£47,810–£54,710 for 2025/26) or Band 8a (£55,690 upwards) depending on seniority and lead responsibilities. Private sector sonographer salaries vary by employer and role structure; experienced practitioners in private settings can earn £50,000–£75,000+ depending on caseload and specialism.

Career Progression in Sonography:

Sonography offers strong career progression and significant earnings growth:

  • Newly qualified Band 7 – developing confidence and speed across one or more core specialisms; completing FMF accreditation for obstetric sonographers
  • Experienced Band 7 – autonomous practice across a broader specialism mix, contributing to student and trainee supervision
  • Band 8a / Senior Sonographer – clinical lead, service management, advanced specialist competencies, student training coordinator
  • Band 8b+ / Consultant Sonographer – clinical leadership, research, service development, advanced interventional or specialist reporting roles

Locum work is popular at all career stages in sonography. Newly qualified sonographers use it to build case volume and specialism breadth. Experienced practitioners often choose locum portfolios for the financial premium and flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What qualifications are needed to work as a locum sonographer in the UK? You need active HCPC registration and a recognised postgraduate qualification in medical ultrasound (PgDip or MSc), plus demonstrated competency in the relevant scanning modalities. For obstetric roles in many NHS departments, FMF accreditation for first trimester and/or anomaly scanning is also required.
  • Do you place sonographers with only one modality? Yes – many roles are specialism-specific. If you only scan obstetrics or only do vascular, we’ll match you to departments that need exactly that. We won’t place you in a role that requires skills you don’t hold.
  • Do you place sonographers in private clinic and mobile ultrasound roles? Yes. We work with NHS trusts, private hospitals, independent imaging centres, and mobile ultrasound providers. Private and mobile roles often offer the highest rates and maximum flexibility.
  • Can you provide short-notice or urgent sonography cover? Yes. Once a sonographer is registered and compliant with us, we can respond quickly to urgent requirements. Sonography is one of our specialisms where we maintain a ready pool of compliant candidates – contact us directly for short-notice needs.
  • What areas do you cover? We place sonographers across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Sheffield, Newcastle and beyond.
