Welcome to Hunter Gatherer AHP – specialist radiography recruitment across the UK.
We place diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers into NHS hospitals, private imaging centres and independent diagnostic providers on both a locum and permanent basis. Whether you’re a department with an urgent gap or a radiographer looking for your next role, we offer fast, compliant and properly matched recruitment.
What is Radiography?
Radiography is an HCPC-regulated healthcare profession divided into two core disciplines:
Diagnostic Radiography – using imaging technology including X-ray, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, ultrasound and mammography to produce images that support clinical diagnosis, monitoring and treatment planning. Diagnostic radiographers work across acute hospital imaging departments, community diagnostic centres and private imaging facilities.
Therapeutic Radiography – using radiation to treat cancer and other conditions, working within radiotherapy departments as part of the oncology team. Therapeutic radiographers plan and deliver radiotherapy treatments, support patients through complex treatment pathways and contribute to quality assurance and dosimetry.
Both disciplines require a BSc or MSc in their respective field and active HCPC registration. Demand for experienced radiographers – particularly in CT, MRI and therapeutic radiography – consistently outpaces supply across the UK.
Why Departments Choose Hunter Gatherer for Radiography Recruitment:
Modality-specific matching General, CT, MRI, mammography, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine — we understand the differences and match on clinical background, modality experience and equipment familiarity. You won’t receive an MRI radiographer for a CT vacancy.
HCPC-verified and fully compliant Every radiographer we place is verified for HCPC registration, DBS, relevant modality competencies and mandatory training before placement.
NHS and private placements We work with NHS acute trusts, private hospitals, independent imaging centres, mobile scanning providers and community diagnostic centres. Whatever your sector, we can help.
Locum and permanent solutions Urgent cover or a long-term hire – we support both with the same rigour on compliance and candidate quality.

- Radiotherapy Planning – CT simulation, dosimetry support, contouring
Roles and Responsibilities:
Diagnostic Radiographers are responsible for:
- Performing imaging studies to diagnostic quality using appropriate positioning, techniques and exposure parameters
- Ensuring patient safety and IRMER compliance throughout all imaging procedures
- Operating, troubleshooting and quality-assuring imaging equipment
- Collaborating with radiologists and clinical teams to optimise imaging protocols
- Escalating urgent or unexpected findings appropriately
- Supervising assistant practitioners and student radiographers
Therapeutic Radiographers are responsible for:
- Accurately planning and delivering radiotherapy treatments
- Operating and quality-checking radiotherapy equipment including linear accelerators
- Supporting patients through treatment – counselling, symptom management, wellbeing checks
- Participating in treatment verification and quality assurance processes
- Contributing to audit, research and service improvement
Qualifications We Look For:
Every radiographer we place holds:
- Active HCPC registration with no restrictions (Diagnostic or Therapeutic Radiographer)
- BSc or MSc in Diagnostic or Therapeutic Radiography (College of Radiographers-accredited)
- Relevant post-qualification experience appropriate to band and modality
- Valid DBS and current mandatory training
- Modality-specific competencies for specialist roles (CT, MRI, IR, mammography, nuclear medicine)
- For reporting roles: recognised post-graduate image interpretation/reporting qualification
Advanced Practice in Radiography:
Experienced radiographers can progress into advanced and consultant practice, taking on responsibilities traditionally held by radiologists:
- Reporting Radiographers (Band 7–8a) – producing independent radiological reports on plain film, CT, MRI or other modalities. In high demand across the NHS as services seek to reduce radiologist reporting backlogs
- Extended Scope Radiographers – injection therapy, biopsy guidance, contrast administration, clinical examination
- Consultant Radiographers (Band 8a+) – specialist clinical leadership, service development, research and education
- Advanced Practitioner Radiographers – working across diagnostic and interventional pathways with near-consultant-level autonomy
These roles attract correspondingly higher locum rates and are increasingly available across NHS and private settings.
Locum Radiography Opportunities:
Locum radiography work offers competitive rates, flexible shift patterns and the chance to build experience across different equipment, clinical environments and imaging specialisms. Whether you want to build your portfolio as a Band 5 generalist or secure block bookings as a specialist CT or MRI radiographer, we’ll find placements that fit.
We have active radiography requirements across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh and beyond.

Radiographer Pay Rates (2025/26):
Locum Radiographer Rates (Umbrella)
-
Band 5£18-£20 per hour
-
Band 6£25-£35 per hour
-
Band 7£30-£45 per hour
-
Band 8£35-£52 per hour
Rates vary significantly by modality, location, setting and urgency. London and South East roles, specialist CT/MRI posts, and interventional radiology typically attract the higher end. Private sector providers often pay a premium above NHS rates for experienced Band 6 and Band 7 practitioners. Overnight, weekend and on-call work attracts additional enhancements.
Permanent Radiographer Salaries
NHS radiography roles follow Agenda for Change (AfC) pay scales. Band 5 runs from £31,049 to £37,796 (2025/26); Band 6 from £38,682 to £46,580; Band 7 from £47,810 to £54,710; Band 8a from £55,690 upwards.
Our consultants can advise on current going rates for your specific modality, band and region.
Career Progression in Radiography:
Radiography offers a well-defined career pathway with specialist and advanced practice options in both diagnostic and therapeutic disciplines:
- Band 5 – newly qualified radiographer, developing core skills across general or therapeutic rotations
- Band 6 – specialist radiographer in a defined modality (CT, MRI, general, therapeutic)
- Band 7 – senior specialist, team leader, reporting radiographer or advanced practitioner
- Band 8a – consultant radiographer, reporting lead, clinical service manager
- Band 8b+ – head of radiography / imaging, strategic and professional leadership
Many radiographers use locum work at Band 5–6 level to explore different modalities and build experience in CT or MRI before committing to a specialist permanent role. For Band 7 and above, locum work often offers the best financial return alongside maximum flexibility.
